Sunday

Ed opened his eyes when the smell of coffee filtered through to his brain.

Blake stood in the doorway, holding two cups. He was already dressed. “Morning, sleepyhead. I figured you might need this.”

Ed struggled into an upright position and picked up his phone, gazing bleary-eyed at the display. “It’s eight-thirty already.”

“Relax,” Blake told him. “Visiting hours don’t start until ten, which gives us time for breakfast. I promised Will I’d ring him when we had more news.” He handed Ed the cup of coffee.

Ed sipped it, wincing as it burned his mouth. Then he remembered what he’d been meaning to mention since the visit to the hospital. “So what did you an’ Will ’ave planned for last night?” His stomach growled.

Blake frowned. “That was something we both forgot to do last night—eat.” He flushed. “I’ve been eating your chocolate-covered strawberries.”

“Oh, that’s nice of ya. ’Ope they were tasty. ’Ave you left us any?” Ed asked sarcastically. “An’ don’t change the subject. The way you told it, Will was all but pushin’ you out the door to come ’ere, but that’s not ’ow it was, was it?”

“Not exactly.” Blake sighed and sat down in the armchair by the window, elbows on his knees. “I may have some making up to do when I get home.” He drank some coffee. “We’d arranged for Rick and Angelo to have Sophie for the night, and Will had this romantic meal all planned out—well, a meal, champagne in front of the fire…” A wistful expression stole over Blake’s face. “And probably making love in front of the fire, too.”

Ed stared at him. “Er, TMI, thank you very much.”

Blake laughed. “You haven’t a leg to stand on, mate—or a bed to lie on come to think of it. Which I’ve been very nice about and not mentioned.”

“Back to your story,” Ed said with a firm glance. He leaned back against the pillows and drank his coffee.

After doing the same, Blake continued. “So when the police called, Will was already preparing the dinner, but he hadn’t started cooking yet. When I told him what was going on, he went very quiet. A moment later he sighed and asked me what I was doing still standing there and to get my arse up to Manchester, because you and Colin needed me.”

Warmth filled Ed at the thought of his friends’ unselfish actions. “I think I owe you both, big time,” he said quietly.

Blake gave a snort. “Oh no, you don’t. I couldn’t possibly count all the times you’ve helped me out. That’s what friends are for, right?” He drained the cup and inclined his head toward Ed’s. “Now drink that down, get dressed and we’ll grab some breakfast. Then it’s off to get your man.”

Ed obeyed with alacrity.

An’ let’s ’ope Colin had a peaceful night.

Colin sat in the high-backed armchair next to his bed and glanced once again at the clock.

Laura, the nurse who’d awoken him with a cup of insipid tea that morning, caught him staring and chuckled.
